As I told earlier, my chroot was borked. Rebuilding was quite easy, although every test pulls in a dozen new packages, my old one had a huge list of packages installed to find file collisions more likely. The only things not working as before are the init scripts. Dependency caching is done, but then nothing more happens. Putting some debug output into the scripts showed that no point in the script is ever reached. People on #gentoo-dev told me to bind mount /var/lib/init.d into the chroot. Problem is: I don't have one in my normal system. And it worked before in my old chroot, flawlessly. Baselayout 2 installed in the surrrounding system, stable baselayout 1 in the chroot.
