After many years of good service my old HP Compax nx9005 had to be replaced by a younger model...and there it is the Dell Vostro 1510. Although I wanted to buy an AMD-based laptop again my choices where so limited I went with Intel. Anyway, the processor is a T8100, 3GB of RAM (so I stay with x86), 250GB of hard disk space, a non-glare TFT panel with 1440x900. Really a nice piece of hardware although the keyboard sounds a bit flaky. Gentoo is now installed on it and apart from some glitches (no working backlight dimming yet) it is rock-solid.

Why would you want to stay with X86?

Because I have no need to switch to amd64? I am not a big fan of "because I can". And additionally I joined the ranks of the x86 team again.

My wife has got this model too. The one problem of this model are the bad speakers.
After trying ubuntu i have installed gentoo 64bit on this laptop. No problem so far.

The major problem with most laptops today is that you still have to pay something like €100 to microsoft for something you don't need and EU don't do a shit about it even if it's illegal to force someone to pay for 3rd party products when buying a product.

I don't think you're paying that much to Microsoft. They provide large discounts to OEMs for Windows, so their actual cut is pretty slim. Maybe 50US$ or so, unless you specify a higher version.

And it's not really fair to say the OEMs are "forcing" anyone to buy anything. They offer their product "pre-loaded" with Windows because that's what most people want. You an me may not want that. So we have complete liberty to not buy the product, if that's a problem for us.

And if governments start to come into the picture, we're all in big, big trouble.
