As Diego already
wrote, there are special installation tools for language specific packages, like Gems for Ruby. TeX Live 2008 (which is in Portage) brings a package manager to update the system until the next release, although it circumvents the Gentoo package managers and is thus disabled in our current setup. Inspired by
g-cpan I started creating a similar tool for TeX Live: Create ebuilds for the TeX Live packages and install them using a package manager suited for Gentoo, so fitting it into the normal Gentoo environment: I call it g-ctan.
There isn't really more than the name at the moment. I produced some code, which is not usable at the moment, as it lacks a proper user interface and is really untested as I develop it without an internet connection. If you are really brave take a look at the Bazaar repository set up for it. It is not ready, I say it again: NOT READY. Don't use it or it might eat your dog, but maybe have a look and comment on it, it is written in Bash, so understanding it should be feasible.
