Not some days after publication as with the book by Tobias Scherbaum but actually some weeks I present a little summary of the second German Gentoo book. Unfortunately Tobias' book is already in a packingbox for my move-to-come, so I cannot directly compare the two (apart from my not so perfect memory).
The target audience is similar for both books: Gentoo beginners, who have some experience with Linux in general. Another shared property is in my eyes the usage of too much Gentoo speak and anglicisms, which were not properly introduced before (although one can guess them from context).
Gunnar Wrobel's book is very verbose regarding the installation and explains a lot of details. The approach is to hold the user's hand, he has to follow the book step-by-step. An update of the tree is recommended as the last step after the book, so all described commands are correct. As with the shipped 2007.0 installation medium there is a defined start state expected by the book, so all users have the same way towards success.
The main focus is configuration and administration of a (web) server, which is quite understandable when having a look at Gunnar's rôle in Gentoo. I learned a lot about Apache.
Summary: In general the book is a well-made introduction and describes sensible actions for problems. Unfortunately some things (in some relatively unimportant sections) are outdated, but one cannot avoid such things in a book. The last chapter with tips and tricks seems to been have written in a hurry, because it tries to describe everything but this results in something blurry. In my opionion the step-by-step structure is a good choice and I even like the general writing style (not perfect though).
