Mail disaster

E-Mail PDF
After returning from my Christmas holiday, I just wanted to check my mail...the Gentoo address had about 700 ready to deliver (without mailing lists). After downloading these, my mail program just broke down and crashed its whole database. Surely there was no fresh backup at hand to recover it, I only had the raw mail data left: But all additional information have been lost.
That was it. I have been using that piece of software for a long time beginning of the 90s), helped with the documentation when it wented GPL...in short I really loved it. Originally a DOS program created for the ZConnect network it had support for FidoNet and other BBS based networks, where I started my online career. It was equipped with Usenet and email support, was GPLed a bit later and developed further, even ported to Linux. This resulted in a name change from CrossPoint to OpenXP (it uses the letters XP far longer than Microsoft!) and when I switched to Linux I took it with me. All short-comings were ignored by me: No real unicode support (thus no umlauts to be displayed or typed, and I am German...brrr), bad GnuPG support and a very unstable database with today mail sizes and masses.
But yesterday was enough! After talking about it on #gentoo-dev, I chose Claws as my new mail and news client and up to now I am happy, although I need to adjust my working manners a bit, as it cannot be used without mouse as easy as OpenXP. But the spam filter works, GnuPG now really is useful, filtering is easy (lots of accounts and mailing lists on my side) and so on.
